HEI-Lab Researcher Contributes to Validation of Ecological Worldview Scale in Portugal

Researcher Pedro J. Rosa from HEI-Lab, together with researchers from CIS/ISCTE-IUL, has adapted and validated the European Portuguese version of the New Ecological Paradigm Scale (NEP), an instrument that assesses individuals’ ecological worldview as opposed to the traditional perspective of human domination over nature.

Pedro J. Rosa, Marta Madeira, and Patrícia Arriaga have published the article entitled “Contribution to an Ecological Worldview: Adaptation and validation of the New Ecological Paradigm Scale to the European Portuguese language” https://doi.org/10.1016/j.erap.2023.100964.

With a sample of 511 participants, the authors adopted a cross-validation approach, using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to refine and confirm the structure of the scale. The results revealed a two-factor structure — Ecocentrism and Anthropocentrism — comprising 14 items, both demonstrating excellent internal consistency. Moderate correlations between the NEP dimensions and the Ecologically Conscious Consumer Behaviour scale provided evidence of convergent validity. The study concluded that, from a psychometric perspective, the scale is valid and reliable for the Portuguese population, further highlighting that, on average, the Portuguese demonstrate a pro-ecological orientation, particularly among young women with low income.

Com uma amostra de 511 participantes, os autores adotaram uma abordagem de validação cruzada, utilizando análises fatorial exploratória e confirmatória para refinar e confirmar a estrutura da escala. O resultado revelou uma estrutura de dois fatores — Ecocentrismo e Antropocentrismo — composta por 14 itens, ambos com ótima consistência interna. As correlações moderadas entre as dimensões da NEP e a escala de comportamento ecológico do consumidor forneceram evidências de validade convergente. A investigação permitiu concluir que, do ponto de vista psicométrico, a escala é válida e fiável para a população portuguesa, destacando ainda que, em média, os portugueses demonstram uma orientação pró-ecológica, especialmente entre mulheres jovens com baixo rendimento.
