Experts discuss mental health challenges and call for innovation during the Mental Debug Session at XVI Symposium on Bioengineering

A dynamic session on Mental Health at the XVI Symposium on Bioengineering on last March 23rd, brought together expert researchers in Mental Health.

Titled Mental Debug, the discussion featured an impressive panel of experts:

• Dr. João Cortinhas, scientist from Neurolentech with a talk titled Unlocking new therapies for neurodevelopmental diseases: The role of patient-derived cell models
• Dr. Ziva Cooper Director of the UCLA Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoids in the Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior with a talk titled Cannabis: Pathway to health, placebo, or peril?
• Dr. Patricio Riva Posse, Associate Professor at the Emory University School of Medicine with a talk titled Deep brain stimulation - targeting neural circuits to treat depression

Moderated by Tiago O. Paiva, researcher at the HEI-Lab and Professor at the Lusofona University, the discussion approached the main challenges facing mental health research and its interface with bioengineering.

Uma sessão dinâmica sobre Saúde Mental, integrada no XVI Simpósio de Bioengenharia no passado dia 23 de março, reuniu investigadores de referência na área da Saúde Mental.

Sob o título Mental Debug, o painel contou com a participação de especialistas de renome:

• Dr. João Cortinhas, cientista da Neurolentech, com a apresentação "Desbloquear novas terapias para doenças do neurodesenvolvimento: O papel dos modelos celulares derivados de doentes"
  
  
• Dra. Ziva Cooper, Diretora do UCLA Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoids no Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, com a palestra "Cannabis: Caminho para a saúde, placebo ou perigo?"
  
  
• Dr. Patricio Riva Posse, Professor Associado na Emory University School of Medicine, com a apresentação "Estimulação cerebral profunda – direcionar circuitos neuronais para tratar a depressão"
  
  

A sessão foi moderada por Tiago O. Paiva, investigador do HEI-Lab e Professor na Universidade Lusófona, e abordou os principais desafios atuais da investigação em saúde mental e a sua interligação com a bioengenharia.
