HEI-Lab Researcher Discusses Social Amplification of Risk, the Role of Social Media, and Ethics in Risk Communication

Rui Gaspar, researcher at BS2C: Behaviour and Social Change in Context, part of the HEI-Lab, presented a paper entitled “Risk events, risk signals & the role of social media: Two questions for discussion” at the symposium “The Social Amplification of Risk Framework: Contemporary significance and Needs for the Future.”

He also contributed to the roundtable discussion “The Ethics of Strategic Risk Communication” during the joint European Safety and Reliability (ESREL) and Society for Risk Analysis Europe (SRA-E) conference, held from 15 to 19 June in Stavanger, Norway.

Rui Gaspar's work focused on the psychological processes involved in the social amplification of risk events, the influence of social media in this dynamic, and ethical considerations in strategic risk communication, both during public health crises and in non-crisis contexts.

Rui Gaspar, investigador do laboratório BS2C: Behavior and Social Change in Context do HEI-Lab apresentou um trabalho de investigação intitulado “Risk events, risk signals & the role of social media: Two questions for discussion” no simpósio “The Social Amplification of Risk Framework: Contemporary significance and Needs for the Future” e contribuiu também para a o painel de discussão “The Ethics of Strategic Risk Communica􀆟on”, na conferência conjunta da European Safety and Reliability (ESREL) and Society for Risk Analysis Europe (SRA-E), que decorreu de 15 a 19 de junho em Stavanger na Noruega.

O investigador falou sobre os processos psicológicos envolvidos na amplificação social de eventos de risco e o papel dos media sociais nesta amplificação, bem como sobre ética na comunicação estratégica de riscos para a população, em situações de crise de saúde pública e situações de não-crise.
