Article: “Exploring the Roles of Body Dissatisfaction, Cognitive Distraction, and Age in Sexual Distress Related to Sexual Function and Sexual Satisfaction in Men: An Extended Understanding Using a Moderated Mediation Model”

Pascoal, researchers at the MC: Mental Health and Clinical Sciences Lab and WIN: Wellbeing and Interactivity Nexus Lab of HEI-Lab, have published an article entitled “Exploring the Roles of Body Dissatisfaction, Cognitive Distraction, and Age in Sexual Distress Related to Sexual Function and Sexual Satisfaction in Men: An Extended Understanding Using a Moderated Mediation Model” in the scientific journal Healthcare.

In this cross-sectional study, data analysis shows that, among cisgender heterosexual men aged between 20 and 65, dissatisfaction with body image is associated with cognitive distraction related to body image during sexual activity. This focus on the body during sexual activity is, in turn, associated with sexual dissatisfaction and sexual distress.

However, the associations between these variables are less robust in older heterosexual men, suggesting that cisgender heterosexual men appear to be less focused on their body image during sexual encounters as they age. This finding invites us to consider whether this phenomenon is related to different socialisation contexts across age groups, to processes linked with ageing, or to both.

The results obtained by this team highlight the importance of assessing men’s body image when they seek support for issues related to sexual functioning, and of understanding how they have related to their body image in sexual contexts throughout their development.

Neste estudo transversal a análise de dados mostra que em homens cisgénero heterossexuais entre os 20 e os 65 anos a insatisfação com a sua imagem corporal associa-se a distração cognitiva durante a atividade sexual relacionada com a imagem corporal e este foco no corpo durante a atividade sexual, associa-se à insatisfação sexual e ao sofrimento sexual.

Contudo, as associações entre estas variáveis tem menos robustez em homens heterossexuais mais velhos, o que sugere que os homens cisgénero heterossexuais parecem não estar tão focados na sua imagem corporal durante os seus encontros sexuais à medida que envelhecem. Este resultado convida-nos a questionar se este fenómeno se relaciona com: o contexto cultural de socialização ser diferente em diferentes faixas etárias; processos ligados ao envelhecimento; ou a ambos.

Os resultados encontrados por esta equipa apontam para a importância de avaliar a imagem corporal dos homens quando estes procuram os serviços por questões associadas ao seu funcionamento sexual e tentar perceber como se relacionaram com a sua imagem corporal em contexto sexual ao longo do seu desenvolvimento.
