Raquel Costa speaks to Público about obstetric violence in Portugal

Raquel Costa, researcher and Executive Director of the Digital Human–Environment Interactions Laboratory (HEI-Lab), was interviewed by the newspaper Público about her research on obstetric violence. In the interview, she presented national and international data published in leading scientific journals, such as the International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics and The Lancet Regional Health – Europe.

In these articles, the researchers show that “many women are subjected to unnecessary or non-consensual medical procedures during childbirth — such as incisions, examinations, or interventions that were neither explained nor authorised — and this leaves marks on both body and mind, even when the baby is born healthy.”

The research calls urgent attention to the need for more informed, respectful, and woman-centred obstetric care, highlighting the lasting psychological impact of obstetric violence and the overuse of certain interventions in Portugal — such as the rate of episiotomies, which is double the European average.

Raquel Costa fala ao Público sobre violência obstétrica em Portugal

Raquel Costa, investigadora e Directora Executiva do Laboratório de Interacções Digitais Humano-Ambiente (HEI-Lab), foi entrevistada pelo jornal Público no âmbito da sua investigação sobre violência obstétrica, onde apresentou dados nacionais e internacionais publicados em revistas científicas de referência, como a International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics e The Lancet Regional Health – Europe.

Nestes artigos, os investigadores mostram que “muitas mulheres são sujeitas a práticas médicas desnecessárias ou sem consentimento durante o parto — como cortes, toques ou intervenções que não foram explicadas nem autorizadas — e isso deixa marcas no corpo e na mente, mesmo quando o bebé nasce bem”.

A investigação destaca a necessidade urgente de práticas obstétricas mais informadas, respeitosas e centradas na mulher, alertando para o impacto psicológico duradouro da violência obstétrica e para o excesso de intervenções em Portugal, como o número de episiotomias, que duplica a média europeia.
