Welcome to Hei-Lab

Digital Human-Environment Interaction Labs

HEI-Lab mission is rooted on the human-context interaction paradigm that looks into human behavior and its contexts interchangeably. Our mission is to converge Psychology and Videogame knowledge into a transdisciplinary scientific platform aimed at studying human behavior within this interactive view. Digital technology, shaped after Psychology principals and created by engineering processes, is HEI-Lab’s signature, offering new psychological research and intervention opportunities. Such opportunities are still to exist in a consolidate fashion in the Portuguese context. Our aim is thus to conduct research on applied Psychology through digital systems. These systems (smart environments comprising virtual, augmented and mixed reality apps) will mimic physical and mental environments optimizing the human-context relationship and providing a deeper insight on this interrelation. Such approach will move from the classical stimulus-organism-response model to the innovative stimulus-technology-organism-technology-response model, from which higher scientific and intervention standards can be achieved. The intersection between technology, and psychology will then be used to test models of human behavior (focusing on psychological processes underlying various forms of ab/normal behavior and well-being across the lifespan) and create new 3Ts (technological therapeutic/intervention tools) to be applied to the contexts of clinical/health, social/organizational, and justice/forensic psychology.

Research

HEI-Lab has strategic partnerships with European (e.g., Bergamo, West Flanders, Antwerp), South and North American (e.g., São Paulo, Southern California, North Carolina), and Australian (Melbourne) universities, which we are expanding into an international network focused on health and well-being, while also maintaining current partnerships with other Portuguese R&D centers in Lisbon, Coimbra, Porto, and Minho.

In line with our core principles, we also transfer knowledge to stakeholders and society: Digital psychology PPS (Processes, Products and Services) is tailored to stakeholders’ needs and capabilities to use them (e.g. application of VR and Serious Games in mental health and forensic contexts with institutional partners, e.g. CHPL, CMRA, JFB).

Design models and methodologies for health and well-being are also at the disposal of the national and international community of designers through a networking system.

We train undergrad and grad students via participation in research within our several research labs (LabPsiCom, LabPsiExp, MovLab, and Delli), and advanced training in transdisciplinary R&I with digital tools, including doctoral, postgrad, and advanced courses open to non-academic practitioners and designers.
